Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

As we begin to reach the Easter finishing line, congratulations to the Under 20 Girls Badminton team who won first place at the ISSFHK finals after dominating for most of the season. It’s a while since we have seen this strength in badminton and a big thank you to Ms Tsui, Ms Yuen, Mr Barretto and Ms Bay who have coached and supported the team.

Karrie Clark has also qualified for the Youth World Championship for her sailing and gained Elite status from the Hong Kong Sports Institute as a result. Incredible success for somebody at this age.

Congratulations to Armelle Donaldson (11Q1) and Gayathri Eyunni (9Y1) for their position as finalists in this year’s Hong Kong Young Writers Award. (second year running for Gayathri – well done!) Their creative writing was credited by the judges as being ‘beautifully composed, imaginative, thoughtful and insightful.’ In addition to being in this year’s WIS Yearbook, their work will be published in the 2019 HKYWA Anthology soon to be available in the school library and across Hong Kong schools.

Adding to our successes, congratulations to the student team from Individuals and Societies that took part in the Tournament of Minds who won the Social Sciences category. The team unpacked an interesting challenge and demonstrated great spontaneity.

Last week’s ID Coin Challenge was a real success and the coins have now been processed. To aid our nominated charities this year, the coin challenge raised over $26,000 and a further $14,000 from afternoon events. This efforts of the community are to be celebrated.

Not wanting to miss a further opportunity for help, next Tuesday is Autism Awareness Day and students are able to dress in blue. At lunchtime, tutors have been sponsored for a Dancethon and it is intriguing to know why Mrs Baxter and Mrs Tang-Hales have secured such large pledges from their forms – I will update you next week.

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
