WIS Summer Renovations

Design & Technology
West Island Design and Technology received a full renovation of our sixth-floor facilities this summer, following the work in food and textiles over the last two years. The intention was always to produce a flagship for design education with ESF and across Hong Kong and we are delighted with the rooms.  A combination of cutting edge Computer Aided Manufacture (including 3D Printing, laser and plasma cutting) and traditional equipment with a bright flexible teaching space provide the ultimate learning environment for our students.

Music
The Music Department has had a new lease of life this summer with some impressive renovations. Music staff are absolutely thrilled with the new design and the extra spaces that have been created. Ms Dalgarno and Mr Jolly feel like they are working in a professional suite of music studios and teaching classrooms, especially with the stylish wood panelling that has changed the acoustic properties of the space. There are three new rehearsal studios, bringing the total to seven.  Two interlinked classrooms, which have an open plan design have been fitted with performance stages and a permanent set up of musical equipment.  Each classroom and two new studios have a suite of iMACs and music keyboards for music production.  A contemporary approach to learning and teaching has been introduced in the larger teaching space. Desks have been removed, and students use tiered seating and various work spaces in the room and in studios for collaborative and solo music making.  Two new upright pianos complement the new facilities. The music department is buzzing. The renovations are proving popular with the students who are already using the new spaces for private practice and independent learning.  A great start to 2016/17 for WIS musicians.

Science
New Biology labs and a renovated technicians room have give the 8th floor science area a much more professional finish. In addition, the 9th floor corridor space now has more natural lighting through wide glass doors as well as improved non-slip flooring for a safer environment.
