WIS Chef – First Round Details

WIS Chef 2019 started off with 45 applicants in the qualifying round.  On 20 February 2019, we had 12 Junior pairs and 2 Senior individual chefs compete in the Quarter Finals round.  Our challenge for the Quarter Finals was to recreate their homemade pasta/noodles as submitted/presented in the google forms.

It was an honour to have Brett Carter (Australian MasterChef Quarter Finalist) as one of our guest judges for the Quarter Finals. We were pleased to join the panel of judges along with Brett and tasted the dishes and were amazed by the skills and flavours presented in each dish. Some dishes presented to us included zesty duck leg with homemade pappardelle, Rabbit stew pasta, homemade meatballs and pasta, Burmese Khao Suey, handmade orecchiette con pesto alla genovese and many more exotic dishes.

Having done Food Preparation & Nutrition at GCSE level we are both familiar with the pressures of cooking under timed conditions. We were surprised to find the atmosphere in the kitchen to be very relaxed and were thoroughly impressed by the complexity of the skills demonstrated by the junior students as well as how they managed to overcome the issues they faced during the two hours. We were also surprised by the wide variety of dishes presented.  Brett was extremely scrupulous in the selection process and we came up with the Semi-Finalists as below who have whizzed past to the next round of WIS Chef 2019.

Coleman Chiu (10Y1)
James Liang (10M2)
Dhruv Deva (7H2) & Anshul Kumar (7H2)
