Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

It was pink everywhere last Friday. Pink food, pink clothes, pink triathlon, pink everything. Our students received important health information, awareness was raised and $27000 has been given to Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation for important medical research. A big thank you to Evie Ng who mobilised us all.

On Sunday, student leaders Brian So, Pearl Ng and Sophia Tavernard-Thompson represented West Island School and laid a wreath during the remembrance service in Central. A really poignant and moving ceremony that marked the 100th anniversary from the close of world war one and gave a moment to think about the servicemen and women across the globe who lost their lives in war. Lest we forget.

Mrs Murchie led a number of students in song as remembrance continued on Monday evening at St John’s cathedral. A stunning and sobering performance. Thank you.

In sports this week, congratulations to Lila Mann who has been selected as one of 20 students in Hong Kong for the Schools Interport Cross Country Championship. Well done to Steven Van Trooijen who has been awarded athlete of the month. Steven has broken the school record as well as the current HKSSF record for A grade indoor rowing as a result of regular and determined training.

Looking ahead, we are excited to host Mike Gatting (26 November) and Oscar Coggins (27 November) who visit us to share their sporting success stories and offer coaching sessions to students. Oscar will be representing Hong Kong in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. They are both  inspirational athletes for us to learn from.

Thank you to the PTA for organising our second comedy event on Thursday. It was a great atmosphere and really nice to see so many parents of Year 7 students. A reminder that the weekly basketball session continues and it would be great to get even more participants. There is no fee (and no minimum fitness level needed!). It is for parents who like to play sport but perhaps haven’t got the time to play it regularly. Any age and ability is welcomed every Thursday in the 9th floor arena between 8-9pm. Take a moment to connect with other parents and look after your health too.

It was a real treat this morning to be greeted in briefing by three Elves who sang to staff. The most awaited event of the year, ‘ELF – The Musical’ is here! Christmas has begun everyone – please support over 200 students who are working hard to treat you in the last week of term. Father Christmas and activities have been planned before the show starts and having seen some of the rehearsals and costumes, this is not one to miss!

Finally, school photos are ready for collection from tutors today.

Happy Horizons Week all,

Chris Sammons

Principal
