Road Safety Awareness for Students

There have been a number of near misses outside school where students have walked out into the road without looking and into the path of oncoming traffic. This has caused cars to swerve or brake sharply to avoid them.

When crossing the road make sure that you follow some simple steps to keep yourself safe:

DO:

1. Remove your earphones if you are wearing them and put your phone in your pocket or bag so you can hear the traffic and you are not distracted

2. Use the pedestrian crossing or crossing point at either side of the school entrance

3. If getting out of a car, taxi or minibus into the road, move to the nearest pavement and walk to the pedestrian crossing or crossing point.

DON’T:

1. Walk between vehicles or behind a bus to cross the road. Always use the pedestrian crossing or crossing point

3. Don’t exit a car or taxi on the traffic side of the road. Always exit on the pavement side and move onto the pavement then use the appropriate crossing points safely.

4. Don’t run into the road in an attempt to catch a bus already at or approaching the bus stop.

Be patient and stay safe.
