Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Last weekend, a group of Year 9 and 10 students competed in the International History Bee and Bowl Hong Kong division. We made it through to the quarter finals with three teams and lost out in a tiebreak contest. Thank you to Mr Rudall and Individual & Societies team for their coaching.

On Monday, I was sent a video about the HPV virus and thought it was a remarkable campaign. I then learned it was something our students had put together. Working alongside HK Public Health Initiative students from CUHK, WIS students have created a short film, assemblies and information letter to parents. In America and Europe, most countries have public vaccination programmes in place and since girls have been vaccinated in the UK, cervical cancer rates have been halved. Unfortunately, it still has prevalence in Hong Kong amongst young people and I would encourage you to watch and respond to this preventable disease. A huge well done to the team Matthew, Kuvira, Tia, Rachel and Ethan.

Kyle and Georgia have also been recognised this week after receiving the Edward Youde Memorial prize. The previous governor of Hong Kong had a clear affinity with education to encourage students in their endeavours as the region’s future generation of leaders. Both Kyle and Georgia more than fit the mould. As well as their exceptional academic achievements, Kyle has worked tirelessly to grow awareness and understanding for those who are affected by mental health and is a keen advocate in the school community. Georgia is an able advocate of student voice and has collaborated with staff teams to ensure ongoing school improvement from the student’s perspective. Both are commendable and deserving of this recognition.

In Sports, A Grade Girls Rugby continue with their successful season having now won the Standard Chartered Bill Williams Competition. Whilst other teams struggled with players, our girls broke through the tough competition and remained unbeaten for the whole day, and so far, the whole season’s competitions. Stunning result ladies.

Looking forward to what seems like a bullet train of a term whizzing past me, Han and Ming Dynasty Day promises to kick off our early Chinese New Year celebrations and for anybody who wants to be one step ahead, we have produced West Island School Lai See packets. Five quality envelopes with WIS logo for $30, unfortunately they don’t come ready loaded, but they are very good quality.

Have a happy weekend!

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
