Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Congratulations to Thibault Minne in Year 8. Being selected as part of a small team to represent Hong Kong in the Worlds Sailing Championship is exceptional. Even more so since Thibault is competing in the Olympics Class and as one of the youngest in his group. Currently ranked 4th, we really hope you achieve your personal best in July.

Our A, B and C rowing teams also brought home no less than seven medals this week after competing at the HKSSF Indoor Rowing Championships. There were several personal records achieved, overall 4th place for the A team and individual gold for Kalem Philips in the 500m. Well done West Island.

For all our sports teams, we have needed to update the representative sports kits to meet new HKSSF regulations and modernise some of the materials. The new kit is on the way and is being phased in over the next two years. Details are being emailed out separately to parents, but we are pleased to make all the ordering online and delivered to your home address. Most importantly if your child is in football, netball, volleyball or hockey teams you should be ordering kit online by the end of June.

As the IB exams are finally over (well done Year 13), some students have already got their results. Seven of our International Diploma students have achieved triple Distinction* across two BTEC subjects, which is exceptional. To achieve Distinction*, you must ensure the vast majority of units are at Distinction level from the very start to the end of the course. For all parents with children who are taking the BTEC Diplomas, you will understand just what a task that is. To attain at this level is actually quite rare and shows exceptional levels of dedication and hard work across both subject areas. To have so many students achieving at that level also demonstrates a great teaching team and I know our students would be behind me giving them all a hearty thank you. Although still to confirm offers, our students have some exciting futures because of these qualifications and their engagement with learning. Commendations go to:

Andrea Antico (Business major, Sport Science minor) Exeter University, Business Management

Carrie Neilson (Business major, Performing Arts minor) Exeter University, Art History & Visual Culture and Drama

David Frame (Engineering major, Business minor) Heriot-Watt University, Mechanical Engineering

Rebecca Fawdry (Art Major, Performing Arts Minor) SCAD, Hong Kong (pending)

Sasha Muscarello (Art Major, Business minor) University for the Creative Arts, Arts and Design

Jeremy Lee (Engineering major, Sport Science minor) University of Kent, Psychology

George Ramage (Business major, Sport Science Minor) Heriot-Watt University, Urban Planning & Property Development

So, I am looking forward to celebrating with everybody at our Year 13 Formal taking place this evening. Other celebrations today include the ESF Chef Final being hosted here from 11am-3pm. We have four executive Chefs judging in the final round and it promises to be another fine dining experience. Good luck to Kenton Lai (WIS Senior Finalist), Alicia Tran and Dorothy Tang (WIS Junior Finalists).

Next Friday I look forward to another party as we gather to celebrate 25 years in Pokfulam. Over 300 of our community will celebrate with us at the WIS 25th Anniversary Gala and it is great that so many will be Alumni, parents and teachers. We look forward to seeing you all and for those who still have it on the ‘to do’ list, this is your final call – would be great to see you there.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
