WIS students in Asia Rugby U18 HK Girls team

It was a proud moment for West Island School as two of its students – Lucia Bolton and Hana Lane – got selected in the team representing Hong Kong for the Asia Rugby U18 Girls Sevens Tour to India last week. The team made it to the finals, where they lost to China in a tough but exhilarating match!

After a rigorous selection process that had players from different rugby clubs in Hong Kong, Lucia and Hana were selected in the final squad comprising of 12 players. They defeated Thailand, qualifying for the semi finals, and were the second-highest point scoring team in the tournament after China! They played against a strong Indian team in an exciting and electrifying semi final, that saw a vocal and almost full stadium of home team supporters cheering for their home team! Despite the odds, Hong Kong team won their match against India, but were defeated by China in the finals.

For our girls, it was also a very humbling and moving experience as they got a chance to visit an orphanage that uses rugby to teach values and self-discipline to children. They presented the kids with some of their old Hong Kong rugby kit and also spent time interacting and sharing their rugby knowledge with them.

Lucia and Hana have been extremely proud and honoured to have got an opportunity to represent Hong Kong at such a competitive level, and so have we been of their achievement! Well done girls!
