Horizon Week - Y9 Community Service Trip - Thailand

Message from the Principal

To Parents of Year 11 students

I know that many of you will be considering your child's future at the moment and thinking about their transition into the upper school. Over the years I have found that it is at this point in the schooling process that there will be a number of you who are considering sending your son or daughter to an overseas boarding school or upper school college.

If you are considering moving your son or daughter to an overseas school or college, can I ask that you make an appointment to see me to discuss the pros and cons of doing this? It has been my experience that students who leave at this point in their schooling often want to return to West Island School after just a few weeks in their new schools.

The reasons are varied and I would be very happy to discuss the possible pitfalls with you. I will always support you in your final decision but it is important that you consider what WIS offers in the upper school compared to other schools and to ensure that the decision is made after informed discussion.

Yours

Jane Foxcroft
Principal

Students on School Premises

We would like to remind you that students are not allowed to be on the school premises before 7am or after 5pm unless they are taking part in a supervised activity.

This is to ensure student safety.

Hong Kong Junior Netball League 2011 Autumn Competition Review

The Junior Netball League (JNL) has allowed us to play against a variety of teams which we do not normally meet and play against in the school league. Our season didn't start as well we had hoped as we lost the first few games to three very strong teams but, nonetheless, we kept our spirits high. These losses made us realise what we needed to improve on and by working on these skills in our Wednesday training sessions we managed to beat The Pink Panthers 19-4. Due to Horizons Week we were one player short in the game against KTGSS but it helped our spacing so we won 16-10.  In the finals, we played for 3rd place against DC.  It was a tight game and we played well but narrowly lost.
Overall, we have improved a lot as a team and as individuals, and we can't wait for next season!  Thank you to all the parent supervisors who allowed this season to happen.

WIS Careers Team

28th West Island School Scout Group

We have had another exciting and busy term.  We now have 57 Scouts and have regular meetings from 3.30pm to 5.30pm on Wednesdays at West Island School. We also do a lot of activities at the weekends. Here are some of the highlights of our activities this term.

  • International Coastal Clean-up at Sandy Bay Beach with 28th Cubs where we gathered an enormous amount of rubbish
  • Adventure Camp in Tai Po which included hiking, swimming in Bride's Pool waterfall, a night hike, campfire, outdoor cooking, etc....
  • Dragon Boating in Shatin at HK Dragon Boat Association - Great fun!
  • Jamboree on the air when Scouts from all over the world communicate by Amateur Radio equipment. Some of our Scouts managed to speak to the Scouts in Japan and India on the radio which was great fun.
  • Scout Rally where Scouts from all over Hong Kong gather at Hong Kong Stadium and perform their Scouting skills. It was amazing to see so many Scouts in one place!
  • Fundraising sales at WIS and Kennedy School - the Scouts started to raise the money to go to Asia Pacific Jamboree in Japan in 2013 and World Jamboree in Japan in 2015. We decided to raise as much as we can for these trips rather than asking parents to pay. Great opportunity for the Scouts to work toward their dream trips! So far we raised nearly $12000. We will do our best to raise as much as we can for the next few years. Thank you very much to WIS teachers and staff for your support last week.
  • Team Fear Junior Challenge Race in Discovery Bay which is an outdoor endurance race. We entered 10 teams and all the Scouts completed the race and had a great time. Well done to the following Scouts for their great performance in the race:

Brandon Sung, Kimberly Tsui, Puru Pahuja, Shivam Tandon, Chris Day, James Doran, Selina Fawdry, Harold Lee, Hugh Lee-Paterson, Sean Seow, Yukito Toma, Douglas Tsui, Matthew Yeung, Molly Chapman, Jake Wong, Lucy Ross, Alan Chan

  • The Hong Kong Scout Association Centenary Gangshow  was held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium on 4th December 2011. We had a great time and the Scouts did an amazing dance performance on the stage. The Scouts worked so hard to learn the dance with their  professional dance teacher for the last few months. Well done to the following Scouts for your great performance and effort.

Shaun Poonawala, Nathan Leung, Katie de Vos, Nicholas Ng, Selina Fawdry, Lucy Ross, Harold Lee, Benley Ho, Puru Pahuja, Shivam Tandon, Kenton Lai, Rachel Roby, Gabriel Wong, Jon Cheah, Akash Anand, Jenny Lim, Brandon Sung, Molly Chapman, Grace Yang, Melanie Racine (Assistant Scout leader).

Well done to all the Scouts for their commitment and hard work! Also thank you very much to all the parents of the Scouts for your support and help and in particular, a special thank you to Melanie (our assistant leader), Mrs. Jackson (Max's mum) , Mrs. Lee (Harold's mum) , Mrs. Sepulcri (Michele and Andrea's mum), Mrs. Berry (WIS CAS office) and Ms. Foxcroft  and Mr. More (WIS teacher) for their great help and support for our group.

Our meeting start again on Wednesday 11th January 2012 and we are all looking forward to another term of challenging and exciting activities. If you are interested in joining us as an assistant leader then please let me know. It would be really great to have more leaders in our group.
