| The Physical Education Department at West Island School is pleased to announce the start of a Pilot Gifted and Talented programme in Sept 2011.
West Island School is committed to developing the best possible learning opportunities for all students. The Physical Education Curriculum aims to offer opportunities that extend students through activities that enrich and promote high achievement and progress. The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport endeavours to work co-operatively with the school, parents and external links to better cater for those students who have a significant demand made upon their time as a result of their involvement in high level sporting activities.

The aim of West Island Schools Gifted and Talented programme is:
To improve the support, provision and recognition for gifted and talented pupils in Physical Education and Sport.
There are 3 key areas of work where the Gifted and talented programme can impact on WIS students:
- High Quality - Raising the quality of PE for gifted and talented young people, which benefits all learners
- Support - ensuring appropriate personal development support for young talented performers in sport
- Raising the quality of coaching and competition for talented performers in sport and offering exposure to new principles of training, sports science and nutrition
The Faculty of Physical Education and Sport will identify Gifted and Talented students utilising a multi-ability pupil profiling system. Selected students will receive additional training and advice from sports specific specialist and fitness experts (subject to forthcoming resources). Additionally, as the programme progresses it is envisaged that students will be assigned a School Sports Mentor who will provide guidance regarding students’ lifestyle balance, involvement in sport, time management etc. We hope to provide a supportive environment that is low in stress and high in challenge.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact a member of the Physical Education and Sport Faculty.
The sessions for Gifted and Talented students in PE and Sport will take place on Mon 19thSept and Wed 30th Nov from 13:00 to 14:30
