Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

We received some great news last Friday after winning the HKISSF Cross Country. Both the boys and the girls were winning teams as well as the school being awarded overall winner. An excellent result for WIS runners.

Pearl Ng has also competed against ten other finalists in RTHK’s national public speaking competition ‘The Speaker’. Competing against 350 initial entrants from both local and international schools, Pearl’s performances were original and captured the judges’ attention with some added flourishes and physical theatre. Congratulations on winning first runner up, Pearl.

Finally, I am pleased to share Lachlan Soughan’s important work with you as we go into the Chinese New Year.

“An estimated 50% of the shark product trade passes through Hong Kong, putting us in a unique position to make a difference. Last week, I participated in a protest against the consumption of shark fin soup. With the help of WildAid and Hong Kong Shark Foundation, we petitioned Maxim’s Canteen at Hong Kong University: to raise awareness about shark finning and the truths behind it. Many students wore shark costumes and had posters with images of sharks being finned and killed. It’s estimated that 100 million sharks are killed every year for shark products. After the fins are removed the shark is often thrown back into the ocean and will drown.

To further raise awareness about this important issue, students at WIS have established a CAS Shark Ambassador activity in partnership with the Hong Kong Shark Foundation. Any student can join this activity which takes place every Wednesday lunchtime in A509.

Whilst eating shark fin soup is a long-standing tradition, it is clear that not all customs are good for us. During Chinese New Year, many restaurants will include shark fin soup on their menus. We would ask that WIS families support us by either choosing a shark friendly restaurant, or requesting for shark fin products to not be served at their table”

Thank you Lachlan for reminding us all about our responsibility for the planet.

Kung Hei Fat Choi!

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
