Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Thank you to the whole WIS community for assisting us in hosting the annual Christmas party for Hong Kong refugees. It was great that students could demonstrate compassion in helping to host the day for this deserving community of people.

Sunday evening saw our A Grade Basketball team place first in the HKSSF final during their evening performance in Wan Chai. To chants of ‘West Is Best’ from our travelling supporters, the team defended an early lead right until the third quarter when our competitors strode ahead by ten points. With just 12 minutes to go, it was an exciting finale as the boys pulled back and rose to the occasion with a final few baskets that firmly put West Island as the winners – unbeaten all season. It is a long time since I have watched such an exciting match.

The ESF finals were equally exciting on Thursday this week when A, B and C grade Basketball teams won on home territory. They were not easy games and it was hard won victory across all age groups.

Congratulations too, West Island runners, as we have placed overall first in the ESF Cross Country Competition which took place last week. Girls came first in all their races along with Boys Year 9 competitors.

In the ninth Hong Kong Speech Festival, Tiasha Dadlani is also commended for being placed second in her category.

Wednesday night saw a spectacular performance from our Drama team with More Light by Bryony Lavery. A challenging piece of work produced in the round left the audience with goose bumps as we were treated to surrealist drama and themes of female oppression. It was technically stunning and the costumes very powerful. Circle in the Water built on the techniques of physical theatre company Frantic Assembly who performed to the community in their visit last year.

A great end to a great year.

West Island staff wish our community peace and rest and I look forward to seeing you all in 2018. Take time for family and rejuvenation, you have earned it.

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
