Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Congratulations to our upper school students at The Peak who were taking part in the 24 Hour Race last weekend. The largest group of students we have seen ran around the clock to raise money and awareness for preventing human trafficking; a great achievement.

Tuesday was the perfect start to Christmas. After the Christmas Market where students raised money for their chosen charities, we were treated to mulled wine and music at the Christmas Concert. A heartening team effort to sing ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ followed some impressive orchestral pieces and singing. The finale was Year 7 performing several songs from ‘The Grinch’. I last saw Year 7 perform Bugsy Malone and they have lost neither their talent, or their passion and their joy was infectious.

We welcomed HRH Prince Carl Phillip of Sweden on Wednesday. As a keen advocate of education, the Prince headed a trade delegation to explore how West Island is implementing technology throughout the curriculum. He was welcomed with a remix of Avicii prepared by Zac Sawyer Coffey and a live musical performance by Josh Yeung, Ethan Yeung and Chi Nok Choi. Sound technology at its finest. Meeting with Design Technology students, the Prince was really impressed by the thought our young people are putting into the use of recyclable materials. The delegation told me that they regularly visit schools and see technology but they were particularly pleased to see the application that was demonstrated in the DT curriculum. The Prince also spent time talking to students with additional educational needs and heard how technology was helping them make progress. A highlight was his movement between floors during break when students gathered to catch a glimpse; Swedish press reported that he felt like a rock star. Our students felt very proud and were touched by his care and interest in them and their learning.

Congratulations to Jody Lee and Isis Lee for being Swimmers of the Month. Their achievements have been hard fought and our PE faculty wanted to celebrate their absolute dedication to training. Well-deserved both.

I also commend Pearl Ng and Sacha Field who took part in RTHK’s ‘The Speaker competition’. Pearl has secured a place in the final 10 and will compete again in February. Both created worthy pieces on the theme of ‘Connect/Disconnect.’

The weekend will be filled with more grit as A Grade Basketball participate in the HKSSF final at Southorn Stadium. Several of us will be there to support our school team and parents or students are most welcome to spur them onto victory. The match starts at 7.15pm.

Enjoy a great weekend.

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
