Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Psychologists have identified that one of the significant acts humans can do to protect their own well-being is to give to others. Acts of generosity and taking action to change the lives of others can bring deep change to our minds and hearts.

Thank you to Megan, Victoria and Mariam for organising Pink Week and our dress down Friday. Mr Harding excelled himself this year working with these two girls and has counted over 30,000 HKD which will be given to Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.

Our global citizenship continues as students turn their attention to other good causes and reflect on the concept of inequality.  Our Inter-Dynasty Food Drive looks to help others with the basics at Feeding Hong Kong. Donating canned, dried and specific food items such as baby food, we will make a significant contribution to the food banks in Hong Kong which are accessed by our community’s poorest families. Thank you for the generosity of students in supporting this worthwhile cause.

Thank you too for the eighty representatives from West Island School who will hit the streets on Sunday morning at the ESF Charity Marathon as part of the ESF 50th  Anniversary celebrations. The money raised will also go to charity and supports a local children’s hospital.  The final celebration will be the Gala Dinner held on 6 December. Details have just been released and you are all invited to join West Island staff to mark this historic occasion. Early bird prices for our celebration at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre can be accessed here and is available until 1 November.

It was an exciting week for many Year 13 students who have now started to receive their university offers which include Bristol University, King’s College London, Royal Holloway, University of London and Warwick University from the UK, and University of Mississippi from the US. It looks likes another rewarding year for the Higher Education and Careers team who have supported students aiming for the top research based universities. It coincides with the relaunch of our revised Higher Education and Careers website which can be viewed here. On the site students will be able to research upcoming university visits to the school, find out about external Higher Education events happening around Hong Kong and many summer programme opportunities. We include a comprehensive list of links to assist young people and families prepare for their next steps.

As a piece of housekeeping, can I please request that parents email both the Tutor and Main Office at wis@wis.edu.hk when your child is absent, late or needs to leave early.

We are in final preparations for our Diwali Ball which takes place next week. There are still a few tickets available, please contact Ms Mulchandani (roshni.mulchandani@wis.edu.hk) if you would like a ticket. I wish you all a happy Diwali, and of course, I am busy practicing for the finale…

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
