Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

This week, students in Year 11 began their IGCSE/GCSE examinations with Mathematics as their first exam. We wish them a good outcome to their academic efforts in the weeks ahead and a restful summer. We also look forward to them returning into our upper school in the new academic year. To those leaving us, we wish them all the best and know they will take West Island’s spirit and the many values they have learned in our community both inside and outside of the classroom.

We also saw students participating in the ISSFHK competitions at Sandy Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday with a large number of student participants.

On Wednesday, we held what has become an annual event at the school, the WIS “Brilliance In Business“. Year 10 students pitched new business ideas to a group of business professionals and the most viable business ideas were awarded. The products this year were extremely well thought out and the presentations I saw were superb. The panel had a hard job to choose but eventually chose a technological device, “Luminous” to aid recharging of technology remotely as the winning business concept. My thanks to the Business department lead by Ms Gossage for this great event and to the parents and business experts who grilled the students on their presentations.

We also congratulated the Tournament of the Minds Team who won the Social Sciences challenge of this inter-school competition which tests thinking skills to the limit. Finally, it is important to recognise our MUN team who attended the Hong Kong Model United Nations Conference at the Science Park. WIS delegates were seen passing many resolutions and learned that through debate and compromise, it was possible to form constructive consensus. In particular, congratulations to the Iceland delegation, represented by Andrea Wong and Mahir Pasha, for their ‘Outstanding Delegation Award’ in the NATO committee. We must also acknowledge Adrian Tang, who was instrumental in preparing and training our delegates and researchers through encouraging courtesy in debate and ensuring a deeper understanding of the conference procedures.

As a gentle reminder, we have a two day holiday next week due to a public holiday on Monday and a disaggregated CPD ESF day on Tuesday.

I wish you a pleasant long weekend break.

Yours,
Jane
