Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

In these last few weeks of term I would like to celebrate the achievements of students who facilitated the Integrated Brilliant Education Trust Sport Day. Student Leaders from West Island School have worked with the charity to provide an underprivileged community in Hong Kong both opportunity and resource to experience their own Sports Gala. It was great to read Year 9 feedback and their realisation to learn how easy it is to reach out and help somebody.

Thank you to all staff and students who have taken part in Digital Literacy Days. As well as thinking more deeply about the use of technology in each of the subject areas, children have also worked with interdisciplinary units. A well-planned unit involving Dragon Boating combined Individuals and Societies, PE and Languages in a unique way. It allowed students to see how conceptual knowledge can inform our learning about the world in a more challenging way.

Whilst Digital Literacy Days was happening, IB students completed their Group 4 Projects as part of their Science requirements. I listened with interest to one group who were researching the structure of gecko skin to inform the design of better grip beach shoes – who would have thought of that connection! As part of a multidisciplinary team studying a particular Science topic students share ideas, cooperate in design and research and have plenty of fun. Congratulations to the winners who researched the shock absorbency of hedgehog spikes.

Congratulations also to Juliana McAlpin and Barnaby Tibbats who have won the ESF Year 7 Biathlon. Their efforts were richly rewarded and mustering that energy towards the end of term has drawn respect from all areas of the school. The teams have been training since Easter and were rewarded with many personal bests, podium finishes and the overall Champions Trophy.

Lastly, our WIS Bake Off. The Championship winners were presented with their trophies this week at the end of an incredible year creating, risk taking, competing and finally, eating. I look forward to next year’s competition.

We are almost there….keep going WIS community.

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
